Death in Paradise fans react as detective’s return ‘sealed’ to ‘replace’ beloved character
Death in Paradise fans might be in for a treat as Selwyn Patterson’s (portrayed by Don Warrington) fate remains uncertain. Bookies are betting on Danny John-Jules’s comeback as Officer Dwayne Myers. Sara Martins, known for her role as Camille Bordey, has also been tipped for a comeback.
In last week’s heart-wrenching episode, the Commissioner confessed to his team: “There is also a second apology I have to make,” reports the Express.
He revealed a burdensome secret, admitting: “I have been keeping something from you which… on the advice of a trusted friend, I have decided to share with you all. The position of Saint Marie’s Police Commissioner is being phased out, and I am being phased out.”
When Naomi (Shantol Jackson) protested, “They can’t,” Selwyn soberly responded, “I am afraid they can, and they are.”
As viewers grapple with Selwyn’s potential exit, bookmakers are making predictions about potential character returns to the beloved Caribbean island.
Dwayne made his last appearance in the Death in Paradise Christmas special with his dad, Nelson (Ram John Holder), and his absence in the latest episodes has dismayed fans.

Betway spokesperson Mike Reading has revealed: “The latest season of Death in Paradise has already hinted at a major departure – with Don Warrington’s character, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, potentially exiting. As one of the longest-serving characters, the Commissioner has been at the heart of the series and Saint Marie’s police force since the very beginning.”
Mike continued: “While this isn’t the first time an exit has been teased for Warrington – after the 100th episode saw his character considering retirement following a near-death experience – this most recent development may see the Commissioner role change or be ‘dissolved’ for good, paving the way for a drastic shakeup to the show’s long-standing format.
“Should Warrington depart, Danny John-Jules is the 3/1 favourite to return to Saint Marie in what could be a surprising twist – reprising his role as fan-favourite character Dwayne Myers to take on the mantle of Commissioner. Close behind is former co-star Sara Martins, priced up at 5/1, who could make a dramatic comeback as Camille Bordey.”

Speculating about other potential replacements, he added: “Also in the running are Martin Clunes (7/1) and Adjoa Andoh (8/1), following success with respective shows Out There and Bridgerton. Elsewhere, Lennie James (12/1) and Diane Morgan (16/1) could bring an entirely new dynamic to the detective series, while Wonka star Paterson Joseph is the longshot at 25/1.
“As the newest season continues, all eyes are on who might step into paradise should Commissioner Patterson bid farewell for good!”
Fans have been vocal online about their wishes, with many rooting for the return of Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) or Jack Mooney (portrayed by Ardal O’Hanlon).
One enthusiast took to a Facebook fan page to express their hopes: “If Selwyn Patterson leaves Death in Paradise, can we have Humphrey and Jack come back to save him from being axed? “.
Echoing the sentiment, another chimed in: “Bring back Humphrey,” while a third shared: “I like all of the characters, especially Selwyn, I do miss Kris Marshall.”
Death in Paradise returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
