Death in Paradise legend reunites with Humphrey Goodman in major crossover after exit
Beyond Paradise's Christmas special saw on character make a surprise return for Humphrey Goodman and Martha Lloyd's wedding.
Beyond Paradise broadcast its Christmas special this evening, featuring a surprise appearance from a beloved Death in Paradise character. Selwyn Patterson (portrayed by Don Warrington ) was reunited with Humphrey Goodman ( Kris Marshall ) as he and Martha Lloyd ( Sally Bretton ) finally exchanged vows.
Throughout the festive episode, Humphrey and his team tackled two significant cases. The first centred on a break-in at a local pub, whilst the second involved a gentleman called David (Adrian Edmondson), who arrived at the police station clutching a photograph of Humphrey, yet couldn’t recall why.
David, who was suffering from dementia, sought the detective’s assistance in locating his sister, whom he hadn’t encountered for years. Whilst the team investigated, Martha and her mother, Anne (Barbara Flynn), were occupied with organising their secret wedding ceremony.
Martha also requested her mum collect a special guest from the station, someone who needed to remain concealed from Humphrey. Nevertheless, near the episode’s conclusion, the mysterious visitor was revealed to be the Commissioner.
“I can’t believe you have come all of this way just for me,” Humphrey remarked as he stood beside his best man, reports the Express.
“I didn’t,” the Commissioner responded. “I was in the UK anyway, visiting my daughter. This was a happy coincidence.”
“Even so, thank you, sir,” Humphrey continued. “Or should I call you Selwyn?”
“No,” Selwyn curtly answered.
Humphrey and Martha subsequently moved everyone to tears as they finally became husband and wife. At the ceremony’s conclusion, Selwyn was caught off guard by an unexpected phone call from Saint Marie, with Detective Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) reaching out to the Commissioner for assistance.
“Inspector Wilson….” Selwyn responded as he took the call.
Humphrey then enquired of his former boss, “If everything was ok?” to which he responded, “That was the new inspector, he is working on a case in Saint Marie, but there seems to be links to the UK, which he would like me to look into while I am here.”
In the last series of Death in Paradise, Selwyn made the choice to depart Saint Marie following the loss of his Commissioner position. Despite being given the opportunity to reclaim the role, he chose not to accept it.
Nevertheless, viewers will need to wait and see whether the Commissioner makes his way back home.
Beyond Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
