Beyond Paradise star Barbara Flynn has teased that there is a “bombshell” coming for Humphrey. The fourth series of the BBC hit started last week, with Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) back solving crimes in Shipton Abbott. However, Barbara, who plays his mother-in-law Anne Lloyd, has hinted that there will be a few bumps in the road.
Anne’s involvement in local politics and policing sparks a bit of friction with Humphrey, and asked what that was like, the actress said: “At a certain point in this series, a bombshell drops. It makes Humphrey think, ‘Oh my God, not only is Anne at home, but she’s also going to be in my work now’. All I can say is that it’s going to be a major challenge for both of them.”

Kris previously featured in the BBC‘s crime drama Death in Paradise, set on the imaginary Caribbean island of Saint Marie, before reprising the role of Humphrey in its spin-off Beyond Paradise.
The last series saw the character investigating an array of odd goings on in his Devonshire village, and in the Christmas instalment he tied the knot with long-term love Martha (Sally Bretton).
Kris let slip a few details about the programme’s latest run during a recent appearance on The One Show, when he revealed there was plenty of “drama” ahead.
He said following the wedding in the festive special, “there’s not the will-they-won’t-they drama going on”.
“But there’s a lot more dramas following him,” he added. “Drama is not too far away with Humphrey!”

The actor was also quizzed about his favourite crime from the new episodes of the TV favourite.
“Well, I mean, I always love anything involving water and being in the water or on the water,” said the star.
“We have got a wonderful episode this season about mermaids. So obviously that invariably involves a lot of water. And yeah, so that’s always my favourite.”
Death in Paradise first aired in 2011, with Kris appearing from series three to six. Beyond Paradise, following the character as he settles down in Devon and polices the area with Detective Sergeant Esther Williams (Zahra Ahmadi), started in 2023.
