Events took a devastating turn on Friday’s Beyond Paradise, as Humphrey (played by Kris Marshall) seemed to reach his ultimate verdict on who would depart the Shipton Abbott police force.
The detective was eventually compelled to reveal the truth to his colleagues after his superior pressed him for a response about who would be departing.
To his astonishment, Humphrey’s colleagues proved remarkably understanding, and each volunteered to leave so the detective wouldn’t have to make the choice.
“I will back your decision, whatever you decide,” Esther reassured him, as Margo added, “We all will,” the Express reports.
Near the end of the episode, after resolving their most recent case, Humphrey visited his boss to deliver his verdict.
“I assume you have made your decision,” James said, to which Humphrey handed him a folder.
“I have,” the detective explained as James asked, “So, who is it to be?”
Without uttering a word, the pair simply smiled at each other. Nevertheless, in the preview for next week’s concluding episode, Anne spoke to Martha about Humphrey.
“He seems quite chipper considering the circumstances,” she said, cutting to another clip of Humphrey saying, “New starts all round.”
“I can’t work with this, Mr. Smith,” Kelby then raged before Esther said to Humphrey, seemingly confirming it is the detective departing the force, “This can’t really be it.”
The synopsis for next week’s episode also appears to confirm Humphrey’s fate, stating: “It’s Humphrey’s last day as detective inspector, and the whole team is eagerly awaiting the town’s annual pirate festival.
“Danger, however, is ahoy when Geraldine Desai’s nautical exhibition goes up in smoke, leading to the ancient treasure map of pirate Elias Cutler going missing amid the chaos.
“On the trail of the missing map, Humphrey soon has suspicions when he discovers that Geraldine has been selling her memorabilia to pay for her husband’s care and recently had the map revalued.”
