BBC Death in Paradise viewers say same thing as Selwyn Patterson’s fate confirmed
On Friday night's Death in Paradise, BBC viewers discovered the fate of fan-favourite Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
In the most recent episode of Death in Paradise, viewers were given a glimpse into what lies ahead for Commissioner Selwyn Patterson. Fans of the popular BBC show were left shocked earlier this month when it was revealed that Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington), was being made redundant due to budget cuts within Saint Marie’s police force.
The situation escalated last week when Selwyn was introduced to his replacement, the young and overly cocky Sterling Fox (Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge). With Sterling continuing to ruffle feathers within the police force, it appears that Selwyn’s fate was sealed in the latest episode.
On Friday night, Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) remained determined to solve the mystery surrounding Dorna’s (Judith Jacob) death, unconvinced by reports that his mother died at sea. However, Sterling dismissed his concerns and ordered the DI to close his mother’s case.
During the episode, Mayor Catherine Bordey (Élizabeth Bourgine) sought out Selwyn, believing he could assist Mervin in keeping the case open. However, Selwyn pointed out his diminished authority, stating: “I no longer have any sway.”
Selwyn didn’t think he could help to keep Dorna’s case open
When Catherine questioned: “Even if others still need you?” Selwyn responded: “People have to get used to not relying on me like they did.”
Unconvinced, she retorted: “50 years of service to this island and now you can just walk away? Not care anymore?” Selwyn admitted that distancing himself emotionally might be his only coping mechanism for his current situation.
Before parting, Catherine left him with some food for thought: “Is that really how you want this all to end? By turning your back on everything you used to stand for? Selwyn, Mervin came to Saint Marie looking for answers, if he has to leave without finding them, then this island has let him down.”
Her plea clearly made an impact, as he dutifully donned his uniform and made his way to the police station, intent on reopening the case for Mervin in a rather unorthodox approach. He informed Sterling of his plan to arrest him for the damage done to his car, a clever ruse that would buy the team some precious time to unravel the mystery of Mervin’s mother’s death.
Sterling was ‘arrested’ in order to buy the team more time
The resolution came by way of old letters penned by Dorna to Mervin’s father. Initially presumed to have perished at sea, the plot twisted as evidence surfaced that she had been killed by her old friends Roy Palmer (Gerard Horan) and Brianna (Joy Richardson), leading to their arrest.
As the episode drew to a close, Sterling disclosed to Mervin his intentions of discussing his ‘arrest’ with the Chief Commissioner when he returned back to Jamaica.
Mervin, however, had a different take, replying: “With respect Mr Fox, I’d like to point out that if we did things your way a man guilty of murder would be walking free right now. Which I’m sure the Chief Commissioner would be very interested to hear. You know what would fix this Sterling?
“When you go back to Jamaica, you tell your boss that to avoid any more mistakes like this being made by your good self, he needs to reinstate the commissioner.”
Selwyn told the DI he didn’t need to do that for him, although Mervin disagreed as he said: “I wish I could have done more, if it wasn’t for you, today wouldn’t have happened.”
Fans were overjoyed at the return of the commissioner, as a teaser for the upcoming episode revealed Selwyn had been offered his job back. One thrilled viewer took to Twitter to exclaim: “YES SELWYN!Definitely just shouted at my TV in excitement.”
Another chimed in with: “Yes Selwyn is back!” Someone else penned: “Selwyn has always been the best character.” One viewer said: “Well best news of the year #DeathInParadise and hopefully the Commissioner is staying in paradise again another well written show.”
