BBC pay tribute to Death in Paradise co-star with sweet gesture

Death in Paradise came to an end on Friday night as BBC viewers saw the Saint Marie team solve another mysterious murder.

On Friday night, the beloved BBC crime-drama Death in Paradise came to an end as viewers saw DI Mervin (Don Gilet) help the Saint Marie force solve another murder.

As the series came to an end, fans saw DI Mervin contemplate his future on the island after being told by Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) that he has a brother.

When the credits started to run, BBC viewers saw the programme pay tribute to a beloved member of the Death in Paradise team.

A title card appeared on screen, which said: “En la memoire de notre ami Denis Guyenon 24/06/1965 -06/07/2024.”

The text, which is in French, translates to ‘In memory of our friend”. Denis was part of the Camera and Electrical Department on the BBC show.

According to his IMDb, the crew member worked on 60 episodes of Death in Paradise as a still photographer. He also worked on the French TV drama, Captain Marleau.

Emotions were at an all time high during Death in Paradise’s finale as one of the most beloved character’s on the show made an unexpected exit.

Over the past few weeks, the future of Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington) was uncertain, after he was told his job was being axed over budget cuts.

After playing a key role in helping DI Mervin (Don Gilet) and the team catch the murderer of Mervin’s mum, his role was reinstated. However, it seems as though he decided to change his mind.

When the team were celebrating their latest case, Selwyn pulled up to the bar in a taxi to say goodbye to Catherine Bordey (Élizabeth Bourgine)

Realising he was planning on leaving, she asked why he fought so hard for a job he then turned down. He replied: “I don’t know, but it felt wrong to say yes, too much has happened and right now, I can’t see a way to get back to how things were.”

BBC viewers learnt he’d be visiting his daughter Andrina (Genesis Lynea) and he wasn’t sure when he’d be returning.

As he told Catherine to look after herself and the team, she had some parting words for him as well. She said: “Of course, promise me this isn’t farewell but au revoir.”

It’s not been confirmed whether or not his departure from the BBC show is temporary. Before the series aired, actor Don spoke about the changes his character was set to face.

He said: “It’s very interesting because we discover other aspects of Selwyn and that’s always the joy about playing a character like him – there are so many different sides to him.

“You think you know about somebody but due to life events, you learn more about them. He’s opening up, he’s a bit like a flower coming in to bloom.”
