Death in Paradise fans ‘gutted’ as Selwyn Patterson bids farewell and replacement takes over
Death in Paradise fans were left heartbroken on Friday after Selwyn Patterson bid farewell to his colleagues
Death in Paradise stalwart Selwyn Patterson (played by Don Warrington) introduced his replacement during Friday night’s instalment – and fans were not impressed.
During the episode, DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet) and the Saint Marie police force had another murder to solve after a serial dater was killed at his villa.
He was waiting for a woman he had met on an app when their video call was interrupted by an intruder. However, Mervin was perplexed by the presence of a bullet in the victim’s hand.
As the detective worked on solving the case, Selwyn prepared to say goodbye as he packed up his office.
“Selwyn, don’t tell me this is it?” Catherine quizzed as the Commissioner started loading boxes into his car.

Selwyn replied: “I am doing a handover with the gentleman who will be overseeing things after me, and I am on gardening leave for the rest of the week, and then I am gone.”
“It is all happening too quickly,” the bar owner said, as Selwyn continued, “Enjoy the rest of your weekend.”
Later on in the episode. Catherine informed Selwyn’s colleagues that his replacement was due to arrive the next day.
“So, has Selwyn told you about what is happening tomorrow?” Catherine asked, to which a confused Naomi replied: “No.”

“I had a feeling he hadn’t,” Catherine continued. “The person taking over from him arrives. They are doing the handover, after he will be gone.
“I think tonight, it is his way of saying goodbye to the job and to his team.”
As the episode came to a close, Selwyn left the station and wished his predecessor “good luck”.
Fans were also left confused by Selwyn’s replacement, with many questioning why the Commissioner was being replaced when his role was being “dissolved”.
“Selwyn is leaving because they are doing away with his position, then why is a replacement being written in?” one fan asked.
Someone else wrote: “Going to miss the Commissioner.”
A third added: “Surely #DeathInParadise can’t get rid of Selwyn.”
“So gutted, how can they actually replace Selwyn?” another commented as one replied: “Agreed.”
