Death in Paradise fans react as they spot Humphrey Goodman crossover in spin-off as DI returns
Return to Paradise fans have spotted yet another Death in Paradise crossover in the BBC spin-off.
Fans of Return to Paradise have caught wind of a fun Humphrey Goodman connection in the new Death in Paradise spin-off.
Friday evening saw viewers settling in for the fourth episode of the BBC’s breakout show, which featured Mackenzie Clarke (portrayed by Anna Samson) unravelling yet another perplexing case.
Mackenzie takes center stage as the series’ pioneering female lead detective, and eagle-eyed devotees have picked up traits in her character that echo past sleuths from the original Death in Paradise series.
Over on a dedicated Facebook fan group, one enthusiast posted: “Mackenzie is the female version of Humphrey, I love it.”
Quick to concur, another fan expressed: “OMG, yes, I totally see the crossover,” while another chimed in with: “The female detective is definitely mimicking Kris Marshall,” reports the Express.
Yet another fan commented on the distinct vibe: “Mackenzie is Humphrey Goodman vibes.”
Besides these observations, there was chatter about a Ben Miller nod in the spin-off, and even Anna Samson herself recognised the likenesses.
Chatting with Express.co.uk, among others, she disclosed: “So the show, without being a carbon copy of the original, has lots of tips of the hat to the original, not just with the characters but even certain shots are paying homage to the original, like on the beach with the suitcase and not [wearing] an appropriate outfit for the weather. That is certainly a wink and a nod to the original.”
The series earlier surprised fans with an appearance by Death in Paradise’s very own Jack Mooney, as played by Ardal O’Hanlon, although he hasn’t been spotted in subsequent episodes.

Despite not getting the chance to work with Ardal on set, actress Anna shed some light on his character’s prominence in the show. She detailed: “We can expect Ardal to make more than one appearance than just in the first episode because he plays my boss back at the Metropolitan Police.”
Elaborating further, she divulged: “I am in constant contact with him, trying to figure out when I can get out of Dolphin Cove and come back to London. So he’s quite an important character to Mackenzie, he is her boss and someone she is friends with and respects.”
Anna also expressed her eagerness to mesh with the series’ ensemble, saying: “I didn’t get to meet Ardal because he shot his stuff in London and my stuff in Australia. I want to meet all of [the Death in Paradise cast]. I think it is something about playing the lead detective in a Paradise show, so I want to talk to them; I would love to meet them all.”
Return to Paradise returns on Friday at 8pm on BBC One.
