Death in Paradise fans spot problem with DI Mervin’s arrival in Saint Marie
Death in Paradise returned to BBC screens on Sunday night, with the 14th series of the hit crime drama introducing viewers to the show's new detective, DI Mervin Wilson
Death in Paradise fans were thrilled as the show made its much-anticipated comeback on Sunday, 2 February, with series 14 debuting on BBC One.
The latest instalment introduced viewers to DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet), who stepped into the shoes of DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) as the new top cop in Saint Marie.
The season opener threw us straight into a gripping conundrum when newbie Benjamin (portrayed by Anthony J Abraham) mysteriously didn’t show for his first day at work, and was later found dead by the roadside. Despite his initial plans to return to the UK, Mervin’s discovery of Benjamin’s body compelled him to remain on the island to unravel the truth behind the suspicious death.

However, eagle-eyed viewers spotted an issue in the episode’s storyline, as they questioned Mervin’s haste to leave the idyllic setting of Saint Marie, reports the Express.
Fans took to social media to express their disbelief, with one viewer commenting: “I think it’s gas that every lead detective in Death in Paradise has a mad obsession with getting back to London when they’re literally in the most stunning location imaginable,” adding: “Like you want me to go solve crimes on Saint Marie I’m there in a heartbeat, no questions asked.”
One viewer also jokingly added: “London or a shack in the Caribbean, with Harry, overlooking a setting sun, on a golden beach. Oh gee let me think. #DeathInParadise.”
The new DI’s no-nonsense approach may have stirred things up in Saint Marie, but it looks like Don’s portrayal is hitting all the right notes with fans back home.

“Love the new series of #DeathInParadise being back. Don doing a great job at the helm,” enthused one fan, while another shared: “I do really like Mervin though! Really looking forward to the rest of the series with him! @DonGilet #DeathInParadise.”
Another fan expressed their affection for the character: “I love Mervin… Sarcastic, with a good heart. Stern, but understanding and wants off the Island but he ain’t leaving,” and yet another added: “I know Mervin is rude and blunt, but I just love him.”
Death in Paradise airs on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One
