Death in Paradise fans ‘work out’ DI Mervin paternity twist after spotting clue

Death in Paradise fans are certain DI Mervin Wilson's father is closer than he thinks.

Death in Paradise left viewers with a major cliff-hanger following the season 14 finale, where it was revealed that DI Mervin Wilson (played by Don Gilet) has a brother on the island. As the BBC show’s bosses and cast have remained tight-lipped about the upcoming storyline, fans are certain there could be more family drama in store for the detective.

During the 2024 Christmas special, Mervin arrived in Saint Marie to find his estranged mother, who gave him up for adoption and soon realised she had passed. However, there was a shroud of mystery surrounding her death, and Mervin went straight to work. He eventually found the preparator and found closure after the entire ordeal. During the finale, the detective visited his mother’s grave to say goodbye ahead of his return to the UK, and discovered a letter which leads him to realise he has other family members on the Caribbean island.

As well as an unidentified brother, viewers are convinced that season 15 could feature a major paternity twist in the upcoming storyline with Mervin’s boss, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (Don Warrington). Taking to social media, one fan wrote: “Selwyns is Mervin’s Dad. He had to step down when Mervin became a DI on the island. No idea on anything else, it doesn’t really fit in with the story, and I know there’s more holes than a colander, but that’s what I’m going with.”

This theory came after Mervin learned that his father, Charlie Wilson, vacationed on the island of Saint Marie with his family in April 1974. He met a young Dorna Bray and fell in love with her. She subsequently became pregnant with Mervin.

However, one fan shut down the theory with: “Selwyn already has had one unknown child plot. It would be boring to have another one.” Another user echoed: “The theory isn’t awful, but it doesn’t make sense also, it wouldn’t really improve the storyline, as as Selwyn already has a daughter, and she is probably at least 10 years younger than Mervin.”

Despite this a third fan praised: “Oh my goodness, I like that theory,” while one remained uncertain and shared: “Mervin was very clear he knew who he father was/is. Doesn’t mean he’s wrong.” Although the potential storyline has yet to be confirmed, fans can expect the drama to return later this year in December for its annual Christmas special.
