Death In Paradise's Shaquille Ali-Yebuah has issued a heartbreaking warning over the future of a major character on the BBC show as he teased 'ups and downs'

Death in Paradise newcomer Shaquille Ali-Yebuah has shed some light on Commissioner Selwyn Patterson’s future amidst concerns that he may be leaving Saint Marie. A preview of this week’s episode revealed a glimpse of his potential replacement, Sterling Fox, played by Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge.

While Selwyn’s fate remains uncertain, Shaquille, who plays officer Seb Rose, hinted that fans can expect plenty of drama, including “heartbreak”, “ups and downs”, and many surprises in the rest of the series.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Shaquille expressed his admiration for Don Warrington, saying: “Don Warrington is the heart of the show from season one to season 14. 14 Seasons, he’s been there from the beginning. Even when there were new detectives, he just stayed there, and he’s like the foundation.”

On the subject of Selwyn’s replacement, Shaquille observed: “The character is played by Trieve Blackwood Cambridge, who’s a very good actor, very cool guy, we got to meet and bond on set.”

He noted that fans might initially resist the new character, given their affection for Commissioner Selwyn, but that Trieve plays the role exceptionally well, reports the Express.

Shaquille teased the dynamic between the old and new Commissioners, saying: “It’s almost like seeing the past and the future in terms of a young commission and an older Commissioner, and just that dynamic, but that episode the fans are going to love. It’s going to be interesting.”

He concluded by promising an exciting and unpredictable ride for viewers, saying: “There’s going to be ups and downs, there’s going to be surprises, there’s going to be shocks, there’s going to be heartbreak.”

Shaquille added: “There is so much, and it just gets better. Every episode gets better.”

A sneak peek from this week’s episode hints at who might be stepping into Selwyn’s shoes. The clue comes as Catherine piques interest by asking, “Has Selwyn told you what is happening tomorrow? The person taking over from him arrives.”

The blurb for Friday’s instalment reveals: “Mervin and the team delve into the murky world of online dating when a man is gunned down in his villa. He was awaiting a woman he’d connected with on an app when their video chat was abruptly interrupted by an intruder.

“However, Mervin is left scratching his head over a bullet found in the victim’s hand. Meanwhile, a fresh face on the team makes waves for all the wrong reasons, and Mervin’s dogged determination to reopen his mother’s case attracts the gaze of a dubious character.”
