Death in Paradise spin-off star confirms arrival of new detective – and it’s bad news for Humphrey Goodman

Death in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise will see a new detective join the series, with star Zahra Ahmadi opening up about how he's similar to Humphrey Goodman

Zahra Ahmadi, who stars as Esther Williams in the new series Beyond Paradise, has given fans a sneak peek into what they can expect from the Death in Paradise spin-off. The show, which premieres tonight, introduces a new detective who bears a striking resemblance to Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall).

Discussing some of the challenges Humphrey and Esther will face in the series, Zahra revealed the addition of two new detectives – DI Jacob Tremayne (Steve Oram) and DS Fenella Ford (Gabby Best).

She shared: “The first episode involves a crime on the Devon-Cornwall border. It’s fun because it addresses the age-old “cream or jam first” debate!

“We see the Cornish equivalent of Humphrey and Esther, and there’s a bit of rivalry between the teams as they figure out jurisdiction.”

When asked about her favourite episode, she said: “My favourite was episode five. I really enjoy the episodes that have a supernatural element to them and this one delves into local legend. Even Esther gets a bit spooked at points because it’s such a hard case to explain before Humphrey solves the mystery,” reports Plymouth Live.

“Special mention to Miles Sloman who wrote the episode. We did a writing course together and it was such a privilege to act out his words and bring his vision to life. He even came to set to watch us perform, which was really special.”

Tonight’s episode will see the two new detectives ruffle Humphrey and Esther’s feathers as they try to solve their latest case.

The plot summary hints: “When a body is found in a river on the county border between Devon and Cornwall, Humphrey and Esther are forced to work alongside their Cornish counterparts.

“While their rivals are quick to brush off the death as a tragic accident, Humphrey’s instincts tell him there may be more lurking under the surface.

“Meanwhile, following the success of Ten Mile Kitchen, Martha decides to expand the business. However, just as everything seems settled, she and Humphrey are thrown an unexpected curveball.”

Beyond the detective’s arrival, there’s more drama brewing in Shipton Abbott. The new series also welcomes back Martha’s (Sally Bretton) ex, Archie (Jamie Bamber).

Martha last encountered Archie when he attempted to kiss her in series one. However, it appears Humphrey isn’t concerned about his rival’s return to the town.

Kris Marshall, who portrays the detective, commented on Archie’s comeback: “Humphrey doesn’t feel threatened by Archie’s return. He’s always been a confident and emotionally strong person, and he’s very secure in his relationship with Martha.

“In past series, his issues stemmed from Archie working so closely with Martha but this time, Humphrey isn’t concerned. He’s more bemused than anything else. He isn’t losing sleep over it and is accepting of the situation.”
