Death in Paradise favourite Ben Miller is absolutely ‘thrilled’ as ITV’s Professor T, the detective drama he stars in, has been greenlit for a fifth series.

The show, which will see its fourth series hit screens later this year, has already got fans on tenterhooks with the news of its renewal for another run.

ITV Assistant Drama and Comedy Commissioner Callum Dziedzic confirmed the exciting development, saying: “It’s a real pleasure to bring another series of Professor T to audiences.

“With its gripping crimes, fascinating characters, and captivating cast – led by the stellar Ben Miller – the show continues to surprise and delight both die-hard devotees and fresh viewers. It has truly evolved a unique identity that extends beyond its original format, and we’re eager for our audience to dive into what we’ve got in store for the upcoming series.”

The Death in Paradise alum Ben Miller is set to reprise his role as the enigmatic Professor Jasper Tempest from Cambridge University, while Frances de la Tour returns to play his formidable mother, Adelaide Tempest. They’ll be joined onscreen by Zoe Wanamakeras Aunt Zelda Radclyffe, and Juliet Stevenson, who’ll again step into the shoes of psychologist Dr Helena Goldberg, reports the Express.

Modeled after the Belgian series bearing the same moniker, Professor T revolves around an exceptionally gifted but OCD-afflicted criminologist who assists the police in cracking complex cases.

Miller expressed his excitement, gushing that he is “beyond thrilled” about the return for a fifth season, hinting that audiences can expect to see his character face “his most baffling case yet: romance”.

“The fact that audiences worldwide have embraced the show so warmly is hugely rewarding, and we’re already brimming with ideas to make Series 5 even more quirky, heartfelt, and surprising,” Miller said. “Here’s to another season of baffling crime, dreaming spires, and ironing that tweed….”

ITV has teased that the fifth series of the hit show will be packed with unexpected twists and turns, promising fans six new episodes full of “unexpected new relationships and more complex crimes for the Professor and police unit to tackle”.

The upcoming season is expected to include dark storylines such as a “boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa”.

Beloved characters will be confronted with difficult decisions, heightening the tension and drama surrounding Professor T and his squad.

Expressing excitement about the new series, Jo McGrath, Executive Producer and CCO of Eagle Eye Drama, shared: “Professor T continues to go from strength to strength. It’s a joyous series to make, reflected in the number of returning core cast and crew.

“Season 5 will prove to be a momentous one for Professor T, both personally and professionally, and the series will climax with one of its trademark series finale episodes guaranteed to keep audiences glued.”
