Death in Paradise star Don Gilet has spilled the beans on his character DI Mervin Wilson’s unique entrance into the sun-soaked BBC drama, explaining how he stands out from the previous sleuths of Saint Marie.

Don graced ITV’s Lorraine with fellow Death in Paradise cast member Shantol Jackson, who portrays Naomi Thomas, on Friday, 14 February. The pair delved into the fresh episodes of the beloved series, which made its comeback on telly in January.

Chat show queen Lorraine Kelly probed into what makes DI Wilson distinct from his predecessors on the detective front. Don stepped into the shoes of Ralf Little’s DI Neville Parker as the new face of law and order in “Death in Paradise.

“I think what’s different about this one, is there’s a through line now. There’s an arc. There’s a personal journey that’s going on with the detective because he’s originally there to try and find his mother,” Don explained during the chat.

He went on to say: “And he happens to still be on the island when the latest crime is happening, so they think ‘let’s make use of him.'”

Lorraine highlighted the detective’s ‘reluctant’ stance towards his stay on Saint Marie, noting it adds an ‘interesting’ layer to his character, reports the Express.

“Absolutely, he’s torn. Because he’s got this inner struggle,” Don disclosed. “He wants to be there to find his mother but he doesn’t know what it’s going to be like when he meets her. He finds out she’s died, then he has to stay there, in this place he’s tried to leave.

“It’s all that struggle going on. He doesn’t get on with these people because he doesn’t want to be there. And everything happens, yesterday time, he’s come from London.”

Death in Paradise started with a bang as Mervin found himself in hot water when he stumbled upon the lifeless body of Benjamin (Anthony J Abraham), the newbie who had conspicuously vanished from his job. This unexpected twist forced Mervin to stay back and unravel the mystery shrouding Benjamin’s death, which seemed increasingly suspicious.

Stirring the pot with his straightforward approach, the new DI has caused quite a stir in Saint Marie, nonetheless managing to charm Death in Paradise fans who took to social media to laud his performance.

Death in Paradise airs on Fridays on BBC one at 9pm
