Death in Paradise’s Selwyn Patterson confirms exit date as first-look at replacement revealed

Death in Paradise fans were left gutted after Selwyn Patterson confirmed his job was being dissolved.

Death in Paradise’s beloved Comissioner (played by Don Warrington) confirmed when he would leave the Saint Marie police force during Friday night’s instalment.

Despite Catherine Bordey (Elizabeth Bourgine) trying to save his job, Selwyn admitted defeat and explained he would soon be replaced and that he was leaving “within a week”.

At the end of the episode, a trailer for next week’s instalment teased the Commissioner’s replacement.

Catherine saw that Selwyn was packing his office away as she walked in. “What on earth is all of this?” she questioned.

He replied: “I am getting things in order before I leave. I just need this case solved first.”

Catherine explained that the petition to save his job had surpassed 10,000 signatures, telling him, ” Now is the time to act. We are going to Kingston to meet with the Chief Commissioner. He needs to realise the whole island is behind you.”

“I have already spoken to him at length,” the Commissioner fumed. “I am not going to beg for my job.”

“Fine, then don’t.” Catherine simply said before adding. “But I will.”

Selwyn told his friend he was “touched” by the gesture before telling her: “But right now, you are letting emotion cloud your judgement.”

He added: “How many times do I have to say it? This will be embarrassing for both of us.”

However, Catherine’s attempts didn’t make a difference as the Commissioner said he was still being replaced.

At the end of the episode, the trailer for next week’s instalment played out, and fans got a glimpse of Selwyn’s replacement.

As his replacement arrives in Saint Marie, Catherine can be heard saying: “Has Selwyn told you what is happening tomorrow? The person taking over from him arrives.”

Since Selwyn announced his job was being dissolved, fans are hoping one former detective could come back to save his job.

“Humphrey was my favourite. He could come back to save Selwyn’s job,” one commented.

Another agreed: “Bring back Humphrey.”

While a third added: “I like all of the characters, especially Selwyn, I do miss Kris Marshall.”

Death in Paradise returns next Friday at 9pm on BBC One.
