Emmerdale films ‘multiple outcomes’ for Aaron and John wedding in ‘brave’ format change
Emmerdale's John Sugden actor Oliver Farnworth has revealed all on the 'cool' change to the usual format that will see his character's dark lies unravel ahead of his wedding
As Aaron Dingle and John Sugden’s wedding fast approaches on Emmerdale next week, viewers will be treated to “multiple outcomes” of what could go down.
A “brave” format shake-up will see each episode that week styled a little differently as killer John’s lies begin to unravel. With events teasing his darkest secrets could come to light, including Aidan Moore’s fate and Nate Robinson’s murder, much threatens his future with Aaron.
Whether they make it down the aisle remains to be seen, but the cast have filmed numerous different outcomes to the big day to be aired across the week before the “real event”. John actor Oliver Farnworth told the Mirror about the “cool” episode format change, revealing much of what fans see will be in John’s mind as he struggles to contain the pressure over his crimes.
Spoilers have revealed that John is tormented by nightmares as the wedding arrives, with the big day spanning across the whole week. As residents prepare for the celebrations, John and fiancé Aaron are both all over the place.
Events occurring in the village, including the lake being dredged and Aidan waking from his coma, leave both men nervous – but as the ceremony eventually takes place, will they get to their vows? With John’s nightmare outcomes including Aaron rejecting him, Aidan objecting and John being arrested for Nate’s murder, it’s safe to say anything could happen.
Oliver told us: “It’s really cool, actually. When I first read the scripts I thought ‘What’s happening? How will this work?’ They explained it to us, and each episode has a different style with potential different outcomes to the wedding. A lot of those are in John’s mind until we get to the real event.
“I think people will watch on the first day and then, when the pattern is set, they’ll get used to the format of it. I think Emmerdale is being quite brave at the moment with tactics like that, with a lot of flashbacks and things like that. Audiences are more and more used to seeing devices like that on their screens.
“It’s also great for storylines. The Nate revelation, I filmed that back in July last year. We filmed it all in situ at the barn fire, so I’ve known about that and it’s just a case of when do you release that to the audience. I think the fact that the audience know before anyone else in the village is very cool as well, because they go on that journey with John as opposed to someone in the village finding out and that’s when the audience find out. It’s more interesting and there’s a lot of devices being used like that.”
On John’s reaction to learning the lake, where Nate’s body is, needs to be dredged, Oliver told us the villain only has himself to blame. He shared: “[John is] absolutely terrified. It’s all his own making as well, because he tries to stitch Mack up and it backfires and the water supply is poisoned and people end up in hospital.
“He feels terrible about that, but when there’s the revelation that the whole things has got to be drained and dredged, it’s the worst thing that could happen – when he’s meant to be getting married! There’s a lot of sleepless nights for him.
“The problem with that is he’s having nightmares and talking in his sleep, so he becomes terrified of going to sleep because he doesn’t want anything to come out while he’s asleep. It’s just a big web that he’s pretty much created for himself and he’s constantly putting out fires, very much in a state of flight during that week – but also excited about getting married.”
With the threat of Aidan waking up on John’s mind too, Oliver spilled that more would come out about what led to Aidan being left in a coma. He teased: “I think Aidan was a massive part of his past. We still don’t know exactly what happened to Aidan but we know something happened.
“Whether John engineered it or saved him, regardless, Aidan is in this position and it’s someone he loved. I think John’s said his goodbyes to Aidan and still respects his mum, so this revelation that his mum’s on the scene and he’s starting to speak and open his eyes, that’s just massive.
“We don’t know what Aidan’s going to reveal. Not necessarily the things John has imparted to him about recent events, but what’s he going to reveal about events from quite a long time ago? So there’s that jeopardy as well.”
Oliver promised “jeopardy” ahead, with “seismic” events threatening everything. He revealed: “There’s so much jeopardy surrounding John the week of the wedding. Aidan’s in his hospital bed. For all intents and purposes John thought he would be there for the rest of his life and he could go and visit him.
“Now he’s woken up and John’s been confiding in him all the time. How much of it does he know and does he remember? Then obviously all the Nate stuff, which is seismic. I think if he didn’t love Aaron so much he’d probably be out of there.
“He really loves Aaron. I think he’s never been in a relationship with someone so honest and he feels comfortable revealing things about himself in that relationship and it’s quite refreshing for him. He just wants to get down the aisle as quickly as possible and get off on honeymoon.
“He could literally up and leave it all behind him. But there’s also the family as well. He’s never had that. Victoria, Harry – there’s a lot in the village for him.”
