Poor Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) was left feeling isolated in tonight’s episode of Emmerdale, as Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) once again attempted to connect with Clemmie and Lucas.

After Joe woke up from his coma, he confronted Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) about her being responsible for pushing him out of a window. The two characters reached an agreement eventually, which saw Joe save Dawn from going to prison.

Of course though, this Tate wanted something in return. He said to Dawn that he would like to show her that he can be trusted, and also plans on building relationships with her children.

Dawn has told Joe that they are not back together, but she is still continuing to fall for his charm. As tonight’s episode opened, Dawn was rushing around trying to get on the school run, but Joe interrupted her and revealed he had bought some gifts for Clemmie and Lucas.

The youngsters were buzzing over the prospect of shiny new electric scooters, and Dawn allowed them to try them out before school.

When she got back though, Dawn told Joe that creating friendships with Clemmie and Lucas through presents wasn’t the answer. This view lasted all of a few hours though as later, Billy arrived with something for Lucas.

Billy had bought some news shoes for his son, and he had apparently wanted them for ages.

Heartbreakingly, Lucas admitted to Billy that he didn’t need them anymore, because the ones Joe had bought for him were miles better.

Ouch.

Joe did apologise to Billy but as soon as he left, it was quite obvious he didn’t mean it. Dawn told him that while the present giving is a bad idea, she wasn’t going to take the new shoes away from Lucas, because he clearly loves them.

Joe making Clemmie and Lucas happy was obviously about more than just connecting with them. In the café that afternoon, Joe ended up asking Sam (James Hooton) of all people for advice on relationships.

He was subtle in his words and Sam didn’t work out the subtext, but gave Joe food for thought by telling him that a man trying and a woman seeing that he is doing something, is very important in a relationship.

He’s clearly determined to get back with Dawn, but what will Joe do next?
