Emmerdale’s newest detective on the force has struck a chord with fans – and plenty have been begging for him to be kept on as a permanent character.

DS Foy has been assigned to Belle and Tom King’s case after Belle struck her husband in the back with an axe following months of domestic abuse. Fearing Tom would kill her, Belle acted in self-defence, and later confessed all to the cops.

Released on bail, Belle was forced to tell police about the abuse, sending Tom on a mission to destroy all evidence. But DS Foy has made it clear he suspects Tom is a very good liar.

Played by Robert Cavanah, fans are loving the new detective – but it turns out he’s already appeared in the ITV soap once before. Between January and April 2014, Robert played Ian Chamberlain – Val Pollard’s holiday fling.

The veteran actor has also appeared in 14 episodes of EastEnders, in which he played Tommy back in 2004. Robert has also acted in everything from BBC’s Doctors to The Royal, and even appeared in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film The Cradle of Life alongside Angelina Jolie.

But fans have also spotted Robert starring in a TV advert for Staysure – and they found the travel insurance ad so annoying they took to social media to complain about it. One fan simply posted a ‘nope’ GIF, while another fumed: “And then there’s that Staysure advert on telly with COVID 19 cover that needs either ditching or updating.”

Someone else said: “They need to do a remake of the Staysure advert…” As someone else fumed: “Very annoying advert.”

Fans are loving Robert as DS Foy, however, and took to Reddit to share their thoughts. One said: “How much do we love DS Foy?! Finally a policeman who can actually do his job in a soap!!!”

Another said: “Played Tom like a fiddle. ‘Oh, you set up a camera? Well, it might’ve recorded Belle abusing you then!’ Daamn, had him sh***ing his pants!” And a third branded DS Foy a “daddy” in a cheeky quip.
