Is Selywn Patterson leaving Death In Paradise? Don Warrington’s future revealed

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson is set to leave Saint Marie for good after the Death In Paradise character was given his marching orders by the Caribbean team

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson has been on the show for all 14 of its series

Commissioner Selwyn Patterson is set to depart Death In Paradise after a sad twist.

Earlier in the series, the Commissioner – played by Don Warrington – had been given the bad news by JP Hooper that, as part of budget cuts, they had decided to get rid of his role, meaning he would be leaving the team.

In the first episode, after the death of another officer, Selwyn was told the bad news by his former colleague JP. On catching Selwyn at Catherine’s Bar, he said: “Sergeant Hooper, I thought you had a plane to catch.”

JP then replied: “Yes, I do. But I wondered if I could have a chat with you. Have you got some time, sir? So, there are some things I found out about at the headquarters back in Jamaica. They loop me into these things, you know?

“I shouldn’t really be saying anything, sir, but after everything you have done for me, I thought it would be wrong if I didn’t. They are looking to change some things here. Streamlining and your position, Commissioner, they are going to dissolve it. I am so sorry, sir.”

Catherine Bordey had been determined to try and save the role – but it looks like it might be impossible.

“Selwyn, JP just called and told me about your job and that they’re phasing it out,” a worried Catherine said a week later as she confronted her friend, “I knew something wasn’t right about you. But they can’t do this.”

He told her: “But, it seems they can and they have. The Chief Commissioner officially informed me yesterday. It seems it comes back to one thing, to save money.” Catherine was fuming, saying: “But we need you here. The island needs you, so, what are you going to do?”

Later on, the Commissioner told the rest of the team that he would be leaving, with them all devastated to see him going. He said: “I’ve been keeping something from you which on the advice of my trusted friend, I have decided to share with you all. The position of Saint Marie police commissioner is being phased out. I’m being phased out.”

Don has yet to speak out about his character’s future – but there is real fears he could be leaving the show after 14 series at the helm. Whilst many detectives have come and go, the Commissioner has always been a constant.

Is this the end for Commissioner Selwyn Patterson – or will his job be able to be saved once and for all?
