Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) has proposed to Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) in Emmerdale and we’ll be honest, we definitely didn’t expect that.
The trainee doctor became a pillar of support for Sarah after being the first person to learn of her cancer diagnosis. Jacob discovered Sarah’s plan to become a mum through IVF around the same time and, after a bit of time, warmed to the idea and supported her with this as well.
A conversation about not knowing her sperm donor made Sarah worry about the IVF process. This prompted Jacob to suggest that he becomes the sperm donor instead. With her Fanconi Anemia at the front of her mind, Sarah felt comforted by the fact if the illness shortens her life, her baby will still have a father around.
This all happened before Sarah’s operation for her cancer. After the surgery, she was told she had to have a hysterectomy and therefore, was no longer in a position to be able to carry children.
The news devastated Sarah but with Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) and Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) both determined to help her, another idea formed.
The family is now looking at Charity becoming Sarah’s surrogate. Unsurprisingly though, residents closest to Sarah and Jacob have reacted in different ways, with Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) still convinced it’s a bad idea due to Sarah’s FA.
Overwhelmed by Eric’s comments and the knowledge Charity and Mackenzie Boyd’s (Lawrence Robb) relationship is struggling because of the surrogacy, Sarah was touched in this evening’s episode when Jacob took her out for an afternoon picnic.
The character then got a little ahead of himself and made it clear he still had romantic feelings towards Sarah. Eventually, she confessed that she felt them too, but felt scared of committing to something in case Jacob got cold feet again.
Jacob reassured her that wouldn’t happen and they kissed.
Back in the village, Jacob alluded to making their relationship official and suggested they get married. It was a massive surprise and a very quick proposal, but Sarah said yes.
To further show how much she means to him, Jacob gifted Sarah his mum’s engagement ring.
It was a lovely moment, that’s for sure – but is it all going to work out for them?
