Death in Paradise’s Don Gilet addresses DI Mervin Wilson’s future as series ends
Death in Paradise star Don Gilet has opened up about DI Mervin Wilson's future as series 15 ends
Death in Paradise’s latest detective, Don Gilet, has revealed his thoughts on continuing as DI Mervin Wilson following the conclusion of the current series.
This evening marks the final instalment of series 15, leaving viewers wondering whether Mervin Wilson will return to crack more cases on Saint Marie.
Don, who took over from Ralf Little, the programme’s longest-serving detective, spoke exclusively to Reach PLC and other media outlets about what lies ahead for Mervin Wilson.
Discussing the prospect of another series and reprising the role after succeeding Ralf, Don revealed: “It’s been very much a fish out of water for me as an actor, to come in and step into something that’s already got this…It’s a juggernaut of a show.
“And to step into something like that and have that responsibility, it very much is daunting, and it continues to be daunting, because I never want to just rest on my laurels.
“It’s coming back into, as I’ve always called it, the notorious second album, which was a great album. ‘Can you come back and make the second album better?’ Don’t rest on your laurels,” reports the Express.
He continued: “So it’s still very much a fun thing to come back and do, and as long as they want me to do it and I don’t pass out in the heat, I’ll do it.”
Elizabeth Bourgine, who has portrayed Catherine Bordey since the show’s inception, shared that Death in Paradise is the “longest role” of her career.
“I didn’t imagine it would be so much fun,” the actress enthused. “To come again with a new series, with the same character and discovering new things about this character, it’s like a diamond, it shines differently every series.”
Elizabeth further commented, “I love it because it’s always new. There’s always something new to come, and I didn’t imagine it would be so intense to work with the character so deeply year after year.
“It’s series 15 now, and it goes so quickly, but it is great.”
The preview for tonight’s episode hints, “The body of Giles, an eccentric monster hunter, is recovered from the sea. He bears injuries oddly suggestive of the legendary creature he’s spent years chasing – the Lusca. Mervin’s life is turned upside down by an unexpected visit from his niece, Eloise.”
