BBC Death in Paradise star makes surprise return as he joins forces with new detective

DI Mervin Wilson was joined by a familiar face in tonight's Death in Paradise Christmas special

Death in Paradise fans were thrilled to see Selwyn Patterson (played by Don Warrington) make a return to the BBC series on Sunday night. The Commissioner, who left his role and Saint Marie in the latest series, made a surprise appearance in the Christmas special.

The show’s new detective, DI Mervin Wilson (Don Gilet), requested the Commissioner’s assistance as he and the team attempted to solve a mysterious murder in Saint Marie. However, as the murder had links to the UK, Selwyn, who was visiting his daughter for Christmas, offered to travel to Swindon to help with the case.

Although he wasn’t happy about it, Mervin managed to crack the case after the Commissioner provided information to the detective.

Just minutes into the festive episode, Selwyn explained why he was in Swindon. He shared, “The police were called to your colleague’s holiday villa, where, I am sorry to say, a man was found shot dead. Murdered.”

Another wrote, “I knew it was going to be Selwyn!!!”

While a third added, “I definitely didn’t scream with excitement… IM SO HAPPY.”

Someone else said, “Was hoping it was going to be Selwyn.”

Selwyn also surprised fans after he appeared in the Death in Paradise spin-off, Beyond Paradise, where he was reunited with Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) as the couple finally got married.

Ahead of the festive episode, the Beyond Paradise Instagram page also teased Selwyn’s appearance. Along with a photo of the Commissioner, they wrote, “Tomorrow night… the Commissioner might be in the UK, but the Caribbean keeps calling.”

The Commissioner appeared to leave Death in Paradise at the end of series 14 after he lost his job and was replaced by someone else.

After Catherine Bordey (Elizabeth Bourgine) launched a petition to save Selwyn, he was reinstated as the Commissioner, but in a shock turn of events, Selwyn decided to leave and rejected the job offer.

And despite making a return in tonight’s Christmas special, will the Commissioner be back in Saint Marie for series 15?
