BBC iPlayer viewers say ‘brilliant’ TV series is ‘just like Agatha Christie novel’
BBC iPlayer is packed full of gripping TV series to binge-watch - and now one murder mystery show in particular has been recommended by viewers who love Agatha Christie's work
We’ve been spoilt with a wealth of quality TV in recent times, from the final season of Stranger Things on Netflix to, naturally, The Traitors. However, with both now finished, it can be a challenge to find something worthy of a Friday night binge-watch.
Following the arrival of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials on Netflix last month, many viewers are on the hunt for something similar to the English author’s captivating narratives. On Reddit, one user turned to the r/televisionsuggestions forum, which attracts 308,000 weekly visitors, asking for recommendations reminiscent of Christie’s storytelling style – and one show people are discussing is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
They posted: “I’m in the mood for some murder mystery series that feel like an Agatha Christie novel or at least something similar.
“Would be even better if they’re completed and hadn’t been cancelled like so many shows nowadays.”
In response, the comments section was flooded with suggestions, including Poirot, an ITV show based on one of Christie’s renowned crime fiction series.
Another user recommended Moonflower Murders, which boasts a 7.4 out of 10 rating on IMDb. Yet another suggested Death in Paradise as a must-watch, available for free on BBC iPlayer.
Death in Paradise, which debuted in 2011 and is currently in its 15th season, is considered a delightful light-hearted ‘cosy mystery’ set in the Caribbean.
According to IMDb ratings, it’s lauded for its picturesque setting and compelling character dynamics.
One viewer on the ratings site commented: “Death in Paradise is very easy to watch, even if you despise the old fashioned workings of the likes of Miss Marple and Poirot you can grow to love this murder mystery.”
They went on to say: “All in all a brilliant series that is brimming with rich and colourful characters and story lines that captivate the imagination as this somewhat old genre is taken to new territory.”
Death in Paradise was conceived and initially penned by Robert Thorogood, who set the show’s style and structure.
Throughout the years and across multiple series, various key writers have played a part in the programme’s triumph.
During a BBC interview back in 2024, Robert revealed his passion for whodunnits stemmed from a Christie novel he adored. In fact, he would bunk off geography classes simply to devour her books.
Boasting a 7.2 out of 10 score on IMDb, Death in Paradise follows a detective inspector from London who probes a murder on the Caribbean island of Saint Marie.
He ended up stationed with the island’s constabulary on a permanent basis after authorities were impressed with his abilities.
To catch Death in Paradise from the start, you can head to the BBC iPlayer website for hour-long instalments.
Alternatively, if you fancy diving straight into the latest series, fresh episodes drop every Friday.
