Death in Paradise’s next DI ‘sealed’ – and some fans won’t be happy
Fans seem to think that one character might not come back to Saint Marie.

Fans of Death in Paradise have theorised who might step into the shoes of Detective Mervin Wilson, portrayed by Don Gilet, after he leaves the hit BBC crime drama. In a recent episode, the character revealed that he was taking a temporary leave from Saint Marie with fans flocking to social media to share who they think might replace him.
Taking to Reddit, one viewer suggested how the BBC could “shake things up a bit” with Merv out of the picture. They wrote: “Surely a female DI would make things a little different but that’s lazy. I was thinking about this last night and I came up with two options i think could be fun. 1, A DI with a young child. Think maybe 10 or 11 years old. We have seen the island through an adult’s view a lot. A child’s perspective could be interesting and I feel could open up quite a few story lines. I also would love to see how Cathrine and the Commissioner would react to a child.”

They continued: “2, Expanding on that, an actually happily married couple (the Husband doesn’t have to be the DI or even a police officer). As in the previous post a kid could add another dimension to the show.”
However, not everyone agreed as they thought that the show was fine as it is. One person fumed: “I don’t think it needs shaking up. I watch cosy crime because it is non-challenging and comforting, not drama and excitement.”
One more echoed: “No kids, f*** no… How about let’s leave it as it is.”
Someone else said: “The kid thing would be wild logistically. They are on the island 6 months out of the year. The regulatory issues for child actors would cause issues and I can’t see it being implemented due to working hours and all other laws for child actors.”
Back in February, after Mervin and the team solved another case, the detective decided to take his colleague Naomi Thomas’ (Shantol Jackson) advice and go to Antigua to visit his brother Solomon (Daniel Ward).
On the phone, he said: “DS Thomas, I am just letting you know I won’t be coming in tomorrow.
“I am actually taking your advice as it goes, I am going to see Sol. Yeah, well, I mean, I don’t even know if he wants to see me, but hey, what is the worst that could happen?”
However, the episode concluded with Mervin tied up after he had been kidnapped by someone.”What the hell is going on?” The detective quizzed as he tried to break free.
