Kris Marshall receives ‘dressing-down’ as he faces trouble from Beyond Paradise bosses
Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall, who will return for the fourth series of the show tonight, explained he has previously ended up in hot water with show bosses during press interviews
Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall admits he often finds himself on the receiving end of a “dressing down” from show bosses. The 52-year-old reprised his role as DI Humphrey Goodman for the hit show in 2023.
He had previously played the police officer for three series of Death in Paradise, having taken over the role of lead detective from Ben Miller. Ardal O’Hanlon, Ralf Little, and Don Gilet have since fronted the popular BBC programme.
Kris is set to once again return tonight (March 27) with Beyond Paradise as the fourth series kicks off on BBC One. The series sees Kris’ character, Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman, return to pursue his on-screen love interest Martha, portrayed by Sally Bretton.
It was ahead of the release of the third series last year that Kris revealed he often finds himself in hot water with show bosses. It came after he accidentally dropped a spoiler for the series.
Speaking on the TV Reload podcast, he said: “I get into trouble about it all the time, honestly, I’ve had so many dressings down behind closed doors with the amount of spoilers I’m dropping. I need more media training or something.”
Kris recently admitted he can find himself away from his family for four or five months while filming the show. Although Beyond Paradise, which is shot in Devon and Cornwall, is closer than he was when working on Death In Paradise, which is filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.
With Beyond Paradise filming Monday to Friday, Kris even manages to get home to see his family every other weekend. He however says they are flourishing since making the move back to the UK.
Speaking to the Mirror, Kris said: “Actually, I love it. I get the beauty of seeing my family every other weekend, but then I also get the solitude I enjoy at the end of a really hard working week. I rent the same place every year in a wonderful village (near where Beyond Paradise is filmed).
“It’s on a beach that isn’t touristy because it’s quite rocky, but it’s got a wonderful little surf break there.”
Kris has previously said he enjoys getting “vitamin sea,” believing that his time by the coast has been good for his mental health. The actor admits he spent an “enormous amount of time” in Devon and Cornwall in his younger days, both living and surfing.
And while he admits he loves the “beauty” of the area, acknowledges the “huge pockets of deprivation” left by the fading mining industry and fisheries. Speaking to Principle Magazine last year, Kris explained how being based around Devon and Cornwall helps deal with the gruelling filming schedule.
He said: “I am and always have been a really big water person. I was a big surfer growing up. I wasn’t particularly good, but I loved it. I did it all over the world for fun. I love the sea. So every morning before work, I’m in the sea. I’m in the sea after work. I go hiking up on the Moors.
“It’s a huge part of who I am. We talk a lot about mental health these days and how the great outdoors is so good for your mental health. When you’re on a big shoot like Beyond Paradise, which is 70 hours a week for 23 weeks straight, one after the other, while it looks and is bucolic and lovely, it’s also quite hard work. I use Devon and Cornwall to keep my mental health stable.”
