Seeking Sister Wife: Signs Nathalia Lima Wants Garrick Merrifield All To Herself (Why I Think She Changed Her Mind About Polygamy)

Nathalia Lima agreed to be Garrick Merrifield’s second wife in Seeking Sister Wife season 5, but she appears to have changed her mind about living in a polygamous household. The Merrifields made their television debut during Seeking Sister Wife season 3 and returned for seasons 4 and 5. Their search for a second wife to add to their family led to multiple relationships with various women throughout the years. Some of those females spoke little to no English, and didn’t live in the United States.

During recent episodes of Seeking Sister Wife season 5, Garrick proposed to Nathalia, who said yes. Garrick traveled to Brazil for the wedding, but the Brazilian government denied their marriage license after discovering that Garrick was a polygamist. Things got even worse for Nathalia when Garrick’s long-suffering wife, Dannielle Merrifield, announced that she was pregnant. Already disappointed by the canceled wedding, and crestfallen that she wasn’t the one giving Garrick a child, Nathalia was probably rethinking polygamy.

During Seeking Sister Wife season 5, episode 10, Garrick, Dannielle, and Nathalia gathered with some of Nathalia’s friends in the living room of their Airbnb. Since the wedding had been canceled, the Merrifields thought this would be a nice way to spend some time with Nathalia’s guests. The gathering turned into a bizarre airing of grievances that reduced both Garrick and Dannielle to tears. Dannielle admitted that she didn’t feel close to Nathalia, and warned Nathalia that she’d have to accept the fact that Garrick’s time would be divided.

This is a major problem for the Merrifields because Garrick has made it clear that he wants many more wives. In an interview with producers during an earlier episode of Seeking Sister Wife season 5, Garrick said, “I really feel like God promised our family, uh, more than just Dannielle.” He went on to add, “I mean, I had a vision years ago that I had five wives, and they were good.” Garrick appears determined to continue down the path of polygamy, and neither Dannielle nor Nathalia seem able to stop him.

The Merrifields first appeared in Seeking Sister Wife season 3. The couple dated potential second wife Roberta Pache, and the relationship continued during season 4. Roberta, who lived in Brazil, spoke no English, and could only communicate with the Merrifields via translation apps. Despite all that, Garrick ended his 13-year marriage to Dannielle, so he could legally marry Roberta for immigration purposes. She never immigrated to the United States, so the Merrifields divorced for no reason.

After their disappointing experience with Roberta, Dannielle was understandably a little nervous about jumping back into searching for a new sister wife. Garrick had other ideas, and he almost immediately met another Brazilian woman with a limited grasp of the English language. Although while Roberta was age-appropriate, 26-year-old Nathalia was almost 15 years Garrick’s junior. Despite the fact that Dannielle was uncomfortable with moving forward, Garrick proposed to Nathalia anyway.

Dannielle broke the news of her pregnancy to a shocked Garrison during an online FaceTime chat. Garrick had left for Brazil six weeks earlier, and, according to Dannielle, the Seeking Sister Wife season 5 stars had barely spoken since he had left. The initial plan was for Dannielle to travel to Brazil with Garrick, but the two weren’t in a good place, so they decided Garrick would go alone, and Dannielle would meet him there later. Just as it looked like Garrick and Dannielle’s 16-year relationship was on the rocks, the Merrifields were pregnant with their third child.

After the episode aired, TLC posted a carousel of adorable photos of the Merrifields and their baby on Instagram. They did this in April 2024, with a caption that read, in part, “A baby surprise.” According to People, Garrick and Dannielle’s adorable baby daughter, Leia Lilly Melisa Merrifield, was born on May 17, 2023. Due to the season not being aired yet, the couple had to keep their baby a secret from the public for almost a full year. This was probably due to contractual obligations between the Merrifields and the production company.

The last aired episode of Seeking Sister Wife season 5 ended with Garrick’s marriage to Nathalia being denied by a Brazilian judge. Though Dannielle tried to hide it, she was obviously thrilled about the turn of events. It’s unclear if Garrick’s relationship with Nathalia continued, or where Nathalia fits into this new family dynamic. Though Nathalia entered into the relationship with the Merrifields with the best of intentions, she had clearly started to rethink things. She may have been open to polygamy in the beginning, but, in the end, she seemed more interested in having Garrick all to herself.
