While Death in Paradise fans eagerly anticipate the next series of the BBC favourite, there’s another crime drama available to bridge the gap.
The long-running series, which sees Don Gilet as DI Mervin Wilson, who investigates crimes on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, broadcast a festive special over Christmas. It is scheduled to return for its 15th season later this year, when one beloved character is rumoured to be making a comeback.
However, in the interim, a crime drama inspired by novels written by the show’s creator has arrived on Channel 4.
Mystery comedy-drama The Marlow Murder Club is adapted from books by Robert Thorogood, who created Death in Paradise and co-created its spin-offs Beyond Paradise and Return to Paradise.
The novels are set in the English town of Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and centre on a group of local residents who join forces to solve crimes in their community, reports the Express.
The programme launched in 2024, starring Samantha Bond as retired archaeologist Judith Potts, Jo Martin as Suzie Harris, a professional dog walker, and Cara Horgan as Rebecca “Becks” Starling, the wife of the village’s new vicar.
The trio joined forces to investigate following a string of local murders. A second series followed last year, with the amateur detectives tackling another crime.
Both series proved hugely popular with audiences, with one viewer on X, formerly Twitter, describing it as “properly enjoyable cosy crime”.
“Marlow Murder Club is so good it sticks with you,” remarked someone else, whilst another praised it as “brilliant” viewing. “Loved it and the choice of actors is superb,” one viewer gushed.
Another fan declared: “Loved the books, loved the show.”
Writing on IMDb, one impressed viewer observed: “I had high expectations for this, and it did not disappoint. Robert Thorogood has a good pedigree and has given us Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise. This is similar in tone, lighter, easy viewing. Comedic in parts, but the balance of mystery and humour is spot on; they got it just right.”
Echoing the praise, another viewer confessed: “I was expecting a flop, how wrong was I!! It was set in stunning scenery, the acting was pretty good, and it made me giggle in places.”
They continued: “The characters jumped out of the screen, they were so realistic, and it was nice to see a very British series that shone as much as the sun that was beating down on Marlow at the time of filming.”
